Immunoproteins Shown to Prevent Over Activation of the Immune System

Ankeny, IA—February 18, 2008
Great advances in science are often as simple as applying a truth like “the shortest distance between two points is a straight line”.  Such is the case with ImmunoLin®, an immunoprotein concentrate developed by Proliant Health and Biologicals.  From food poisoning and bowel disease to heart disease and diabetes and new flu strains, excess immune activation is dubbed the “fire” that drives many health problems.  Immunoglobulins, or antibodies, are specialized immunoproteins found in plasma that are naturally produced by the immune system. They play a major role in clearing harmful bacteria, viruses and toxins from the body, in both circulation and at the first line of defense in the gastrointestinal tract, called the gut barrier. New research is indicating that dietary supplementation of immunoproteins may be the “straight line” to improving immunity, maintaining gastrointestinal health and protecting against the adverse effects of excessive immune activation on our health.

Researchers at the University of Barcelona, led by Prof. Miquel Moretó, recently took up the challenge of exploring the effects of dietary supplementation of these immunoproteins. The team first developed a novel model of inflammation using very low levels of a potent toxin produced by a common bacterial cause of food poisoning, Staphylococcus aureus.  After proving the model was consistent, the team designed a series of experiments to assess the effects of plasma proteins on intestinal inflammation, gut barrier function, and nutrient absorption.  The results of the series of studies have been published in the Journal of Nutrition with the most recent article in the March issue.  Additional research will be presented at Digestive Disease Week in April.

“In our studies, immunoglobulin concentrates and plasma proteins significantly reduced the impact of the SEB toxin in inducing mucosal inflammation and gut permeability which were mediated by a reduction in inflammatory cytokines.” according to lead researcher Anna Perez-Bosque, PhD. Group leader Prof. Moretó  adds, “While our research will continue, these studies provide an explanation of the benefits reported in food animal species and the mode of action of plasma proteins and immunoglobulin concentrates when given orally.”  Eric Weaver, Chief Scientific Officer for Proliant adds “This is third-party, published, and peer-reviewed research support for ImmunoLin® and its unique ability to prevent excess immune activation in the gastrointestinal tract”.

ImmunoLin® is intended for use in dietary supplements and medical nutritionals.  “The studies are great, but, all of us experience exposure or ‘attacks’ from food, air, contact and water.  It’s in the news all the time.  We need something that will protect the gut and that is what ImmunoLin® has been shown to do. As an example, if you eat out, which we all do, you should take it,” states Nix Lauridsen, the company founder.
